Afrika. Mythos und Zukunft. (Africa. Myth and Future)

Not much progress through decentralisation in Senegal

An idea, not a patchwork

Child labour: a public sector failure

1/2004
Debates about Africa often get heated. The continent’s image is too dismal, say some; glossing over its difficulties is reckless, warn others. This book looks at Africa from many angles, devoting chapters to its history and its culture, its social life and its pressing political and economic problems. It neither plays down the continent’s troubles nor portrays it as one big crisis region. What makes this book different from other publications on the subject is the line-up of authors: scientists and journalists are present in equal number, and the same balance is reflected by the editors. The result is sound information packaged for easy reading. (ell)
