[ Germany promotes Israeli-Palestinian contacts ]

“Peace between Israelis and Palestinians can only be achieved if the proposed road map is kept to, and if the goal of two states in the region that recognise each other is realised,” said German Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul after talks with the Israeli Infrastructure Minister Joseph Paritzky in Berlin at the end of November. “The German government will support confidence-building steps between Israelis and Palestinians. That is why we promote all initiatives which revive the peace process,” she said. That included an agreement reached with Minister Paritzky to set up a working group of Israeli, Palestinian and German experts to discuss how water supply and waste water disposal can be improved for the people in the Palestinian territories. Minister Paritzky had expressly asked the German minister for help for the Palestinians, and named these projects. “Cooperation at the professional level between Israelis and Palestinians has always taken place in recent years. Every further joint working group ensures that the threads of the talks between them do not break and that the ground will be prepared for coexistence.” However, the minister added, addressing her remark to the Israeli government, the protection of investments in the Palestinian territories was also necessary.
