60 megacities, two thirds of them in developing countries, will be home to more than 600 million people in 2015. What is needed are concepts for ensuring the governability of megacities, for tackling problems such as environmental destruction and the growth of slums and for monitoring and evaluating urban development programmes. These issues were discussed at the end of November by international experts at the Megacities III conference jointly staged by the Servicestelle Kommunen in der einen Welt /InWEnt (Service Agency Communities in One World), the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (Konrad Adenauer Foundation) and the MegaCity Task Force of the International Geographical Union. If the issues on the agenda can be resolved, megacities do not need to degenerate into molochs of misery; they will be able to develop their potential as motors of innovation and growth.
