New government for Somalia

Since the beginning of December Somalia has a new government. Head of cabinet is Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi, who was selected by President Abdullahi Yusuf. Somalia-watchers say that Ghedi does have some influence in Mogadishu – in contrast to Yusuf, who was previously President of the autonomous province of Puntland. However there are doubts about Ghedi’s team and its ability to stabilise the country. Virtually all the major warlords – those responsible for reducing Somalia to rubble over the past twelve years – are now represented in his government. In the meantime the United Nations has appealed to the international community to make more money available for Somalia. According to their Emergency Relief Coordinator, Jan Egeland, the UN had 45 million Euro at its disposal in 2004. “We have to triple what we have today to attend to needs here like we are in Darfur,” said Egeland.
