Worldwide privatisation of education

Worldwide privatisation of education is a US objective, according to the globalisation critics of the attac network. In the present negotiations aimed at producing a General Agreement on Trade and Services (GATS) at the World Trade Organization (WTO), attac claims the USA is pressing members to throw open the doors of the education sector and admit private suppliers. What's more, it wants to see all education providers – whether public or private – granted the same entitlement to state support. The European Union (EU) has so far reserved the right to confine public funding for education to public institutions but attac fears the EU position could be softened in the course of negotiations by American concessions in other areas.
