The UN organisation wants to end the disadvantaging of girls in attending school by 2005. It is estimated that a total of 121 million children of primary school age worldwide – including 65 million girls – do not go to school.

The main reasons for this abysmal gender-specific educational situation are the low status of girls in many cultures as well as growing poverty. Based on case studies, the report emphasises the positive impacts of investments in education for society as a whole: infant mortality drops by ten per cent for every year a girl attends school.

Also, education is the best contraceptive. General maps and a statistical appendix with newest data on the living conditions of women and children round off the book. (orb)
