World Bank: Wolfensohn steps down

World Bank President James Wolfensohn – whose current term expires in June – has announced he will not be available for the job again. Ten years are enough, the 71-year-old said at the beginning of January. Wolfensohn moved to the top job at the Bank in 1995 as the candidate of then US President Bill Clinton. Appointments to the post are traditionally the preserve of the United States while the Europeans have the right of nomination at the International Monetary Fund. Relations between Wolfensohn and the administration of President George W. Bush are believed to have been strained for some time.
