Malloch Brown new
chef de cabinet at UN

In January, the director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Malloch Brown, became the new chief of Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s cabinet. He takes over from Iqbal Riza, who retired from the post in December on grounds of ill health. At a meeting that was supposed to be secret but was nonetheless reported in the New York Times, US diplomats kindly disposed to the UN had advised Kofi Annan to make changes in his staff to improve relations with the United States. Before moving to the UNDP in 1999, Malloch Brown was vice-president of the World Bank and is highly regarded in Washington.
