Germany supports peace process in Sri Lanka

"The Federal government supports the peace process in Sri Lanka with all vigour," German Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul emphasised during the visit to Berlin at the beginning of February of G. L. Peiris, the Sri Lankan Minister for Industrial Development. Peiris was the Sri Lankan government negotiator at the fifth round of talks with representatives of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin.

"Within the framework of the multilateral organisations, Germany will speak up to ensure that Sri Lanka receives the greatest possible support," Ms Wieczorek-Zeul said. Also, German development policy would speed up its promotion of economic reform in Sri Lanka. Another important prerequisite for conflict prevention and combating poverty in Sri Lanka, the minister added, was improvement of education and training. In this sector Germany was promoting a basic programme, including peace education, and for vocational training. Germany is Sri Lanka's second-largest bilateral donor after Japan.
