Cooperation with Jordan

Amid the present difficult political and economic situation in the Middle East, the German government is giving Jordan additional support in combating poverty. In inter-governmental negotiations in Amman, the BMZ pledged the Jordanian government 15 million euros for Financial Cooperation and 35 million euros within the framework of debt conversion. Jordan will receive these funds in addition to the total of 39 million euros agreed last year in bilateral negotiations for the years 2002/2003.

The German Federal government orients the content of its development cooperation with Jordan on the Millennium goals, such as halving world poverty by 2015. Accordingly, in the negotiations it was laid down that Germany would support the Jordanian government in implementing its action programme to stem poverty. Germany promotes a programme for the building of primary schools for poor sections of the population in Jordan, and is engaged – as in previous years – in the key sector of water supply and waste water disposal. Jordan is one of the most arid countries in the world. Its serious shortage of water is the greatest obstacle to the country's development.
