US government: new money for fighting AIDS

The US government is to provide $15 billion over the next five years for fighting AIDS, above all in Africa and the Caribbean. Two-thirds of this sum will be new money. President George W. Bush announced the step in his State of the Union address to the US Congress on January 28. He appealed to Congress to agree to his 'Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief' and approve the funds. "At a time when our nation is deploying troops and forging alliances to make our world safer, we must also remember our calling as a blessed country to make this world better," Bush said. A White House statement said the money would be spent mainly on improving medical care in the countries affected.
