[ Austrian Development Agency starts working ]

Implementation of Austrian development cooperation has been in the hands of the newly-established Austrian Development Agency (ADA) since January. Like its German counterpart, the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the ADA is a non-profit company owned by the Federal Government. It now handles all bilateral programmes, awards contracts to NGOs such as the Austrian seconding service Horizont 3000 on behalf of Section VII of the Foreign Ministry, which is responsible for development cooperation. ADA also represents Austria in projects of multilateral donors such as the European Union and the World Bank. Section VII is to focus on drafting fundamental development policy and political guidance in future. Some of the about 45 ADA staff to date come from Section VII, others are from external organisations such as NGOs. ADA is also in charge of cooperation offices in Austria's partner countries. (ell)
