The distinction, which is awarded every two years, goes to individuals and initiatives that are committed to human rights and democracy and that get involved to counter the consequences of colonialism and racism in industrialised and developing countries. The 2006 Solidarity Prize wants to recognise civil society commitment in the following areas: – In some countries experiencing rapid economic growth, adherence to human rights and democratic rules loses significance under the impression of increasing material wealth. The Bremen Solidarity Prize wants to support individuals and initiatives committed to keeping economic development linked to democracy and human rights. – The subject of migration is becoming more and more contentious. Former approaches to accommodate people with foreign cultural backgrounds in immigration countries have shown only limited success. The 2006 Bremen Solidarity Prize would like to recognise novel and promising approaches in this area; individuals engaged in the cultural sector should be given special consideration.
