Sustainable development committee for
the German Parliament

In March, the German Bundestag set up an advisory committee on sustainable development. The new body‘s brief is to promote the sustainability debate in Germany, monitor the work of the Federal Government, verify that policy decisions are compatible with the principle of sustainability and maintain contact with other parliaments to develop common positions on sustainable development. The committee will present biennial reports. It comprises four members of the Social Democrat parliamentary group, three Christian Democrat MPs and one member of parliament each from the Greens and Free Democrats. The governing coalition and Free Democrats voted in favour of the committee‘s formation; the Christian Democrats voted against. The committee is chaired by Social Democrat MP Astrid Klug. (ell)
