EU parliament opposed to sugar reform
The European Parliament has rejected the suggestions of the EU Commission to open the sugar market and to eliminate subsidies. At the beginning of March, a wide majority of the members of parliament declared themselves in favour of continuing to protect sugar producers in the EU from the cheaper foreign competition. The Commission wants to liberalise the European sugar regime because the current market regulations clash with the rules of the World Trade Organisation. (orb)
