Hurdles on the path to world culture

Johannes Müller, Mattias Kiefer (eds.):
Globalisierung der Gewalt. Weltweite Solidarität
angesichts neuer Fronten globaler (Un-)Sicherheit
[Globalising violence. Worldwide solidarity in the
face of new fronts of global (in)security],

The recent controversy over the Mohammed cartoons shows the potential for violence that is inherent in globalisation. This collection of essays broaches the subject of both physical violence and aggressive attitudes towards other cultures and religions. For instance, Trutz von Trotha points out that today’s violence needs to be seen in its historical context. Thomas Hoppe wants religious leaders to take a long, hard look at their faihts’ attitudes towards violence. Norbert Brieskorn argues that, because international politics has been increasingly subjected to international law in the past few decades, violence today can only be used as a last resort. Lothar Brock argues that the wide-spread perception of international law being marginalised is wrong. He emphasises that efforts be made to do what is legally correct.
