War economies

Medico international: Ungeheuer ist nur das Normale. Zur Ökonomie der "neuen" Kriege (The only horror is what is normal. The economics of the "new" wars). Frankfurt/Main, Mabuse-Verlag 2002, 166 pp. € 10.00 ISBN 3-935964-05-6

War economies are a popular subject for research – so science, too, profiteers from the world's many armed conflicts fuelled by illicit transactions with oil, diamonds, tropical timber and other raw materials. A reminder of that was offered in a spirit of self-criticism by war researcher Klaus Schlichte at a medico international conference staged in autumn 2001, that is documented in this book. The material it contains is some of the best that has been published in recent years on the question of the causes of the 'new' wars and what could be done to help bring them to an end. The papers are not dry academic expositions but stirring empirical studies from places such as Angola, Nigeria, Colombia and Cambodia. (ell)
