Slight rise in German ODA
"Germany in 2002 increased its financial support for the developing countries by a good 7 per cent," the German Development Ministry (BMZ) reported in a Press statement on April 22. The Ministry cited the latest estimate of the OECD's Development Assistance Committee (DAC) on the official development assistance (ODA) of the OECD member countries. According to the OECD, Germany's ODA grew from a nominal US$ 4.99 billion in 2001 to US$ 5.359 billion last year. Most of the rise was due to the lower value of the dollar. The DAC converts German ODA from euros to dollars and since the dollar's value against the euro fell markedly last year, every ODA euro in 2002 was worth more in dollars than in the previous year. Adjusting for this effect and comparing the euro values gives a nominal German ODA growth of 2.1 per cent. According to the BMZ, the increase was from € 5.57 billion in 2001 to € 5.69 billion last year. Allowing also for the inflation rate gives a real German ODA growth of 0.4 per cent. That is the figure the OECD gives in its estimate for Germany. (ell)
