Prospects for tsunami regions

According to five major relief organisations from Germany, the focus in the regions struck by the Tsunami in December is now on long-term reconstruction, as the period of acute emergency aid is over. “For us, this means that the affected people must not be degraded to passive aid recipients,” says Martin Bröckelmann-Simon of Misereor. “They must be reconstruction actors right from the start.” Along with Brot für die Welt (Bread for the World), Medico International, German Agro Action and Terre des Hommes, his organisation founded the alliance “Together for people in need – development helps!” earlier this year. In April, members’ donations for tsunami victims amounted to 46 million Euro, of which twelve million was spent on emergency aid. The group defines the following aspects as quality criteria for relief work: orientation to the level of need, coordination with local authorities and UN organisations, monitoring by local partners, concern for social and environmental conditions and consideration of possible conflict potential.
