Education tool kit of rural people

New online tool kit for the education of rural people

Anybody who wants to support agricultural development, must invest in the rural population. For that purpose, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has made an educational toolkit available on the internet. It contains a range of teaching and learning materials. The idea is to equip governments, civil society and international organisations, teachers and other facilitators with the resources needed to help people in rural areas to improve their living conditions.

An internet portal lists the materials according to content, level of education or target group. The topics include information on agriculture and forestry, animal husbandry and crop production, pasture management, fishing, food and nutrition, water, agro biodiversity, food quality and safety, local knowledge systems, fundraising, marketing, bookkeeping and communication. HIV/AIDS, gender equality and conflict resolution are also dealt with.

The educational toolbox was provided by the “Education for Rural People Initiative”, which was launched at the Johannesburg Summit “Building Partnerships for Sustainable Development” in 2002. FAO, UNESCO and a number of other organisations were constituents of the initiative. (orb)
