Debt Report 2003

Global problems – lack of political will to solve them

Receptive but uninformed

No development without institutions

Konflikt als Chance (Conflict as Opportunity)

The debt problem, its background and its implications – these are the issues discussed in this year's debt report by the organisation World Economy, Ecology and Development (WEED). The 65-page booklet offers more than just the informative statistics of past debt reports. Heike Drillisch, for example, shows how debt burdens can be increased by trade, especially by the percentage of trade covered by export credit guarantees. A great deal of space is devoted to the Argentina crisis. Also discussed are possible reforms for the international financial system – an insolvency procedure for nation states, for example – and reform of the international financial institutions.
