[ UN campus in Bonn ]
The Federal Government has cleared the way for the establishment of a 'UN campus' in Bonn. At the end of May, the cabinet decided to renovate the former parliamentarians tower (Abgeordnetenhaus) 'Langer Eugen' and the old assembly room of the Bundestag and offer them as rent-free facilities for the United Nations. An initial 63.5 million euros has been earmarked for the renovation work. At present, the 500 or so staff of the UN institutions in Bonn are spread over four buildings, where conditions are getting increasingly cramped. By the end of 2003, the number of people working for the UN in Bonn will rise to around 630. What Bonn lacks as a UN location, however, is a congress centre catering to the needs of the world organisation's big conferences of parties (COPs). A facility with that kind of capacity is planned for the site of the former Bundestag - but the result of the first invitation for tenders was an embarrassment: neither an investor nor an operator for the facility was found.
