Hunger and globalisation

Uwe Kracht, Manfred Schulz (eds.):
Food and Nutrition Security in the Process of Globalization and Urbanization.
Münster, Lit Verlag 2005, 910 p., ¤69.90 Euro, ISBN 3-8258-6709-9

To what extent is food and nutrition security influenced by the processes of globalisation and urbanisation? More than 60 articles examine this basic question from different points of view, making the anthology rich in information. The book first takes stock of the hunger problem in all major world regions. It then goes on to analyse the impact of technological, social, environmental and economic change on the ability of various population groups to procure food. Some conclusions remain contentious, depending on how one rates the impact of globalisation on social inequality. The book concludes by discussing strategies for eradicating hunger. (bl)
