Development and peace

Development and peace depend on each other: one cannot be achieved without the other. That peace research also shares this view is manifested by the Friedensgutachten, the yearbook of Germany's five leading peace and conflict research institutes, which every year assesses the peace and conflict situation around the world and has been published since 1987. Also in this year's edition, many articles cover subjects in the interface between security, foreign and development policy, such as the reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, the role of the European Union in resolving the conflicts in Central Africa, and the issue of integrating non-governmental actors in international law. The main subject is the war in Iraq, which the editors condemn unanimously. They say Europe must do something to counter the new American striving for hegemony – not military, but in terms of peace policy. (ell)
