Cooperation with Namibia

[ Cooperation with Namibia ]

The German government is going to support the process of land reform in Namibia. That was decided at the inter-governmental talks that drew to a close at the beginning of July in Bonn. The support in question involves strengthening the legal foundations for land reform and investing in infrastructure and consultancy services so that redistributed land can be put to productive, income-generating use.

Namibia and Germany do agree that land reform can help reduce poverty and inequality in Namibia. The Namibian delegation confirmed that reasonable compensation is planned for expropriations. The Namibian government, it said, has engaged an independent team of experts to develop a land reform action plan.

The priority areas of development cooperation with Namibia are natural resources/land reform, road transport, and market economy support, especially promotion of small businesses. For 2003 and 2004, the German government has pledged a total of 23 million euros for programmes in these sectors.
