Basic education for all
Basic education for all Ð the chances of this development target being met by 2015 continue to look slim. That is the conclusion drawn in this year's EFA (Education for All) Monitoring Report, which was published by UNESCO on May 27. The report takes an annual look to see how countries are progressing down the road towards the Millennium Goal. According to this year's issue, 57 countries Ð including two thirds of the countries in Subsaharan Africa Ð will fail to achieve it unless corrective action is taken fast. Another goal, that of halving illiteracy by 2015, looks unachievable for 78 countries Ð including Bangladesh, China, India and Pakistan, four of the most populous countries in the world. (uke)
