“Village Phone” honoured

Konflikt als Chance (Conflict as Opportunity)

The Grameen Bank’s “Village Phone” project in Bangladesh has received the Development Gateway Foundation’s first ever “Petersberg Prize”. The 100 000 euro prize is awarded for outstanding initiatives using information and communication technologies in the fight against poverty. The project conceived by Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus, helps women in rural areas buy mobile phones on favourable credit terms and start commercial phone services which benefit not only the women but also the entire village. The prize was awarded as part of the second Development Gateway Forum at the Petersberg Conference Center near Bonn, Germany, at the end of June. Participants from 39 countries discussed the efficient use of information and communication technologies in poor countries. (ell)
