Gates serve
German campaign for the Millennium Goals

Eight Gates, eight Goals. At the “International Week” in Bens-heim, the UN’s “Millennium Gates“ debuted in Germany. Each is nearly four meters tall, and all symbolise the partnership between people from poor countries and rich ones. The Karl Kübel Foundation, the Christoffel Mission for the Blind, and the City of Bensheim brought to Germany what has already been on display in Rome, Milan, Barcelona, and Sevilla. Luca Cipelletti, the Italian architect who designed the Gates, personally went to the town of 40 000 inhabitants in the federal state of Hesse to help set up the structures. More than 50 local clubs and initiatives took part in Bensheim’s International Week. The Gates are part of the UN’s “Only With Your Voice“ campaign to fight poverty. InWEnt’s service agency “Communities in One World“ is providing organisational and logistic support. The spectacular campaign aims to raise awareness and motivate people to get involved in reaching development goals. It is part of Germany’s national campaign “Show commitment – mobilise people – fight poverty“ for the UN’s Millennium Goals. The Gates will also be set up at Cathedral Square in Bonn during World Youth Day in August when young catholic people from all over the world will congregate in the region. (orb)
