UN reform needs to promote global governance

Dirk Messner et. al.:
Governance Reform of the Bretton Woods Institutions and the UN Development System (Occasional Papers No. 18). Washington, D.C., Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung 2005, 56 pp., ISBN 3-89892-365-7, free of charge at http://www.fes.de/globalization

Kofi Annan's reform proposals are steps in the right direction but they do not go nearly far enough. That is the view expressed by Dirk Messner, Simon Maxwell, Franz Nuscheler and Joseph Siegle in this document published as part of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation's Dialogue on Globalisation. Global problems of unprecedented dimensions (such as climate change and poverty) pose totally new challenges, they argue, and nation-states – no matter how powerful – can no longer solve burning problems on their own. The only solution is more international cooperation within a strong multilateral system. The authors map out in detail the steps that need to be taken. They have come up with no less than an action programme for UN reform. (orb)
