Poverty reduction

Poverty reduction and economic development go hand in hand. That is something made crystal clear by this book on health and education policy in Madagascar and Tanzania. Both countries made huge efforts to reduce poverty in the 1970s and '80s; both invested a great deal of money in education and health. And living conditions improved as a result - but the success was short-lived. That is because economic development was woefully neglected in both countries; the governments ran out of money. Today, the health and education systems of Tanzania and Madagascar are in a sorry state. One of the authors' conclusions, which also has a bearing on the international development policy debate: it is not enough to formulate ambitious development targets; a concept for funding is needed as well.
