Dimensions of the Latin American crises

Dimensions of the Latin American crises

The Andean region is in danger of degenerating into a state of chaos unless its governments jointly launch serious efforts to resolve their social, political and economic troubles. Since the 1980s the area has become a potential powder keg of social problems. The social fabric of the region is breaking apart. In many places citizens are taking to the streets to protest against economic reforms and cuts in social services. Added to that is the drug trade which runs rife through both the economy and society. The anthology “Die Andenregion - Neuer Krisenbogen in Lateinamerika” gives us a snapshot of these developments. The book investigates the various dimensions of the current crisis, the underlying issues specific to each country, the consequences of economies in paralysis, the increasingly authoritarian state structures, as well as the counter-movements mobilised by civil society, and the reactions of the region’s most important trading partners.
