Women have higher crop yields

If the current trend continues, the number of malnourished children in Africa will increase by 3.3 million, from 38.6 million at present to 41.9 million by the year 2025, and the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of starving people by 2015 would be missed by a long shot. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). Its researchers link the sad state of food security in Africa to a small set of deficiencies: poor governance, inadequate funds for agriculture, inefficient water management and too little agricultural research. Furthermore, women who pursue agriculture should be supported more strongly. With the same equipment and education, women achieve up to 22 percent higher crop yields than men. (ell)
