Computers for the poor

A number of African governments want to create a global fund for investment in information and telecommunications technology. The president of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, suggested setting up such a fund at the World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva last year. However, the advanced countries were unwilling to promise any funding. The initiators are now hoping for voluntary contributions from the rich nations. The intention is to use the global fund for investment in infrastructure and the purchase of appliances such as computers and mobile phones. “The advanced countries will profit from this as well,” Wade says. He plans to officially launch the fund with other African statesmen in Geneva on November 17. (ell)
