Since the 1995 agreement by twelve Mediterranean states and the European Union (EU) to create a communal free trade zone by 2012, the North African partner countries have been extensively reforming their economic systems with Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia taking the lead. The financial and banking sectors, trade, public administration, the education and employment system, energy policy and environmental protection, the infrastructure, and the transportation, telecommunication and legal systems are being restructured step by step.

To assist our partner countries in their endeavours, Inwent offers selective programmes on economic reform and market economy organisation, on environmental protection and water management, agriculture and nutrition. We support the continued development of professional education systems with the aim of improving the prospects of the younger generations in particular.

In the Near East region, water is Inwent’s central focal point. We also concentrate on the areas of professional training, the advancement of technology, and sustainable corporate management. Due to its geographical proximity, Europe also has a vital interest in stabilising the Mediterranean and Near East regions, in resolving present conflicts and improving economic and social reforms in these areas. Here Inwent is also involved in initiating dialogue and encouraging the formation of networks among local actors.
