The challenges of the 21st century can only be met if we work together as a world community. Our capacity building programmes rely on the support of a worldwide network of partners. International human resource development for people in key positions works best when all those involved pull together to achieve a common goal and are dedicated to worldwide development cooperation. Inwent therefore places sustainable development and fair globalisation at the centre of its networking efforts with partners and clients. So that people in Africa can benefit from solutions in Asia, and vice versa.
Our principle client is the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) who provides two-thirds of Inwent’s budget. This translates to around 100 million euro invested in development cooperation capacity building programmes in 2008. These programmes are run in close cooperation with other German governmental organisations active in development cooperation: Our partners include the German Development Service (DED), the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the KfW Banking Group (KfW), the Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG, German Investment and Development Corporation), the Centrum für internationale Migration und Entwicklung (CIM, Centre for International Migration and Development), the German Institute for Development Policy (DIE), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Goethe Institute.
Inwent is also commissioned by other federal ministries, among these the Federal Foreign Office (AA), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). We have been managing successful programmes for years on behalf of our clients. We provide, for example, young Germans with the unique chance to study abroad and organise training seminars for managers in Eastern Europe and Asia.
Inwent can look back on a long history of cooperation with the German federal states, particularly through our Regional Centres (RCs) located in almost every federal state. They offer a multiplicity of services: The RCs support One World projects, raise the public’s awareness of sustainable development issues, and promote cooperation with partner organisations. Our centres maintain contact to the business community both locally and regionally and are important facilitators of work-placements for Inwent participants during their advanced training in Germany.
The European Union (EU) is one of the largest donors of public development aid worldwide. The EU is also dedicated to promoting international vocational education both within Europe and throughout the world. It is one of Inwent’s key clients. This is clearly demonstrated by our participation in different EU programmes, such as the “Asia Inwest” programme designed to promote Euro-Asian economic relations and which focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises.
The increasing interdependence of politics, business, the environment and social issues is also increasing demand for people with the skills to act on the international stage. This is why we work closely with international organisations and the United Nations in our capacity building programmes. International organisations also take advantage of Inwent’s strengths — dialogues, extensive partner networks and international training seminars. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan is one example: Here Inwent organises programmes for experts and executives from Afghan ministries designed to promote the rebuilding of a functioning administration. We work with the International Trade Centre (ITC) on the “AfricAdvance” programme. The ITC is the joint technical cooperation agency of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). AfricAdvance strengthens small and medium-sized enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa. Inwent has worked together with the World Bank Institute (WBI) for a number of years on different programmes that focus on issues such as corporate social responsibility (CSR), learning, knowledge transfer and capacity building.
The German business sector also profits from Inwent’s international networks: Through Inwent small and medium-sized companies can access new markets via our manager programmes in Central and Eastern Europe for example. Inwent provides German firms with ways of becoming involved in our partner countries to the benefit of both sides. We are represented by regional centres throughout Germany, making us easily accessible to the local business community. Inwent offers young German professionals the opportunity of gathering work experience abroad. We support the work of foundations with close ties to the interests of business and are commissioned by them to realise promotional programmes for human resource and organisational development. These include the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation, the Hermann Strenger Foundation, the Martin Hilti Foundation, the Dr Helmut Kraft Foundation, and the Donors’ Association for German Science. Business circles link Inwent directly to the boards of directors of firms and the managing directors of chambers and associations.
