In Southern Africa, InWEnt implements programmes primarily on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). To complement these activities we use our network of contacts with industry to establish public-private partnerships (PPP).
InWEnt's activities in Southern Africa are coordinated through our office in Pretoria/Tswhane in South Africa. In line with the special role of South Africa in the region, this is one focus of our work and is frequently the starting point for supranational programmes.
The thematic priority areas of InWEnt's programmes in the region are as follows:

Good governance
To support reform processes and good governance, partners need capacity building services to help them steer their national poverty reduction strategies. InWEnt supports this process in Malawi and Zambia where it offers capacity building in planning, implementation and monitoring as well as in how to ensure the participation of various actors. In the field of public finance too, which is a major element of good governance, we strengthen capacities with the help of further training and exchanges of experience among ministers of finance.
InWEnt supports the realisation of political and administrative decentralisation and the strengthening of local government processes, especially in South Africa, with the help of further training measures for representatives of municipalities and citizens' councils as well as by supporting local economic development.

Water
InWEnt strengthens regional initiatives in the field of cross-border, sustainable water management. At political level, the regional organisation SADC is receiving support, as are river basin management organisations, protected area commissions and other local actors at implementation level.
In future, central actors in the water sector and executing agencies of German development cooperation programmes in Zambia are to be strengthened in their ability to shape change and to push forward with reforms as well as improving their services and steering capacities with the help of human resources development measures.

Sustainable economic development
In order to strengthen the management competence of small and medium enterprises, we support management consultancy institutions, helping them improve the quality of the services they offer. Training and networking are then also intended to foster intra-regional trade in the SADC region and boost the competitiveness of local enterprises.

Education
InWEnt concentrates its activities in the education sector on Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia where it builds competence in the field of education financing. We pass on expertise on internationally tried and tested procedures for managing education budgets in ministries of education and finance, and support the staff of ministries and the executives in charge of decentralised units in the use of basket and budget funding.
Moreover, InWEnt trains lecturers working in pre- and in-service teacher training to use innovative methodical and didactic approaches, thus improving primary education.

Health
InWEnt promotes the decentralisation of state health systems and the establishment of autonomous health institutions at district level in Malawi through capacity building in the fields of health service management, health financing and reproductive health.

HIV/AIDS
To fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic, InWEnt has adopted a multisectoral approach incorporating prevention, minimisation of the socioeconomic impacts of the disease, and treatment. In addition to health education campaigns, we conduct further training courses on workplace programmes in small and medium enterprises in cooperation with the private sector.

Regional cooperation
InWEnt supports economic integration and the realisation of the Trade Protocol of the regional organisation SADC with programmes on customs policy and administration, and logistics, as well as by initiating dialogue events which bring together the customs authorities and the private sector.
InWEnt works with the African regional organisations within the framework of programmes on conflict prevention, peacekeeping and peacebuilding.
We also cooperation with the SADC Secretariat in the cross-border water management sector.
