Good Governance and Reform Processes

The end of the Cold War and the continuing advance of globalisation have given us the chance worldwide to reconsider the role of the state in the promotion of sustainable development, and in reducing poverty. The “new” state lays down common rules and standards at national level, and ensures that the people are provided with the basic services they require. At international level, it represents the interests of the state in a balanced way.

Reforms imply on the one hand more government, in order to provide more and better services for the citizens. On the other, they aim for greater market orientation and the concomitant reduction in government along with greater efficiency and effectiveness. Scarcely any country can escape the pressure to modernise; institutional landscapes are being reformed around the globe. The overarching goal is Good Governance which embraces the separation of powers, effective and efficient administration, a smoothly functioning legal system, opportunities for democratic participation, public accountability and decentralisation.

InWEnt supports reform processes in partner countries, which aim to ensure responsible and efficient government action. We promote effective government, which gears its actions to universal standards of participation, transparency and accountability, and which guarantees citizens a minimum of security and prosperity.

Our instruments are particularly well suited to linking the political awareness and consensus building required with a contribution to strengthening institutional structures.
