Peace and Security

Sri Lanka. Copyright Walter KellerMore than 90% of all wars and civil wars the world has seen since 1945 have been fought in developing countries. These conflicts, and the concomitant collapse of the state, emergence of economies of violence and private actors in violence, as well as the regionalisation of conflicts, have confronted development cooperation with new challenges.

In the Millennium Declaration, the international community undertook to promote peace and development. In line with this undertaking, the German government is working to ensure that effective strategies and instruments are available in the fields of peace-building and crisis prevention. By improving economic, social, ecological and political conditions, it aims to remove the structural causes of conflicts, war and terrorism. “Peace-building and crisis prevention” is one of eleven focal areas and cross-cutting tasks of German development policy.

InWEnt tackles this topic on an inter-departmental basis, concentrating on crisis prevention, peace education, conflict management and peace-building, disaster prevention and disaster management, security policy and conflicts over resources.
